With guidance and effort, pets can usually accompany their families on moves. Please see our report on Renting With Pets for more information. Many behavioral problems can be resolved with the help of a knowledgeable trainer or consultant. And while you may not feel you have enough time to provide your pet with an ideal life, consider if it’s better than the alternative.
Remember pets are for life, and you permitted your animal to have puppies and kittens by not spaying, and by not keeping them indoors/supervised. However, if you are going to do this, I feel it needs to be done correctly. Paying a fee for a pet shows good faith on the part of the new owner and demonstrates their willingness to properly care for the animal. The truth is, there is no such thing as a “free” pet anyway. By the time a cat or dog is checked out by a vet, including shots, worming, health testing, and spay/neuter, a “free” pet will easily cost in excess of $100, and that’s just for starters. Talk to local animal rescues and ask if you can bring the animal to one of their adoption fairs.

While most rescues are comprised of people who are committed to helping animals, it’s still a good idea to check their adoption policies and procedures before handing over your pet. Placing a “free to good home” ad is down right dangerous. Yes this is indeed true, and it doesn’t just happen in the big cities. I am extremely offended by anyone who would want to get rid of their own animal, and even more offended by anyone who would allow their own animal to become pregnant.

Dealers pick up stray or free-roaming animals and even steal animals right out of their own backyards. They also procure “spent” dogs and cats from breeders and obtain animals who are advertised in “free to a good home” ads. Ask the person to sign a contract promising committing to provide the pet with a safe and loving home, adequate food, and veterinary care. If you’re in a position to take the animal back if the person changes his/her mind, include that as a stipulation. The most important step is to ask for a vet reference and then call the vet to verify that their current pets are properly cared for, vaccinated, on heartworm preventative, spayed/neutered, etc.

If you do nothing else, at least take the time to make this one important phone call. Animal “collectors” have been known to respond to Free To Good Home ads with the sincere belief that they’re rescuing the animals. While they may have good intentions, these people collect more animals than they can property care for. As a result, they often live in squalor conditions without adequate food, water, or veterinary care. The investigation began after a cat named Leonard, who was allowed to roam outdoors without supervision, went missing.
Have an EXTRA copy of the animal’s vet record, including rabies certificate to present to the family. Keep a copy for yourself in case the animal is returned. So you have an animal that needs a good home, and the rescues and shelters are unable to help you?

Please read our report on Puppy Mills for the horrors of pets that meet this fate. In March of 2011, Jeffrey Nally, Jr., a 19-year-old West Virginia man, was arrested for torturing and killing 29 puppies he obtained from “free” classified ads. According to reports, Nally killed the puppies using hammers, drills, saws, crossbows, and guns. Some of the dogs were skinned or otherwise mutilated.

When creating a flyer of the animal be sure to list the animal’s information and qualities, and if possible provide a picture. This can be a difficult task, but with some effort, you will be able to find your animal the best home possible.
Frankfurt am Main Warnings and Dangers
There might be a problem, money, time etc…offer anything you can to make sure the animal is spayed/neutered. You may want to remind them that in the contract they agreed to spay/neuter the animal. You can also place ads in newspapers and online, but carefully screen applicants, especially those responding to online ads. People who intend to do harm to your pet will not be obvious with their intentions. They may bring family members, sometimes even children, in an effort to convince you they’d provide your pet a good home.
Whenever I see a "free to a good home posting on CL" I ALWAYS send an e-mail warning them of the dangers; most appreciate it, some tell me to mind my business. The end always comes painfully, either from violent trauma or from lingering disease. Almost Home Adoptions for rescued cats is a registered 501c3 nonprofit rescue and adoption center located in Westminster, Colorado. In an animal hoarding situation, a person has the uncontrollable impulse to need more and more animals — they are like collectors of sorts. Although a hoarder may be caring toward their many animals, hoarding conditions are often unsanitary, dangerous and unhealthy for both people an animals. Assure the family that you will make a copy of the adoption agreement and mail it to them within 2 days.
If your pet is not already spayed or neutered, please have this done before placing it up for adoption. The adoption fee could cover the cost of the surgery. This could save your pet the anguish of falling victim to a puppy mill. Even if your dog is not intentionally bred, it could still contribute to pet overpopulation through accidental or unintentional breedings.

If you see such ads, call the numbers listed and urge the responsible parties to take the animals to a reputable open-admission shelter instead. By properly screening applicants, reputable adoption groups and animal shelters can help ensure that animals find safe homes in which they’ll be treated with love and respect for the rest of their lives. During a recent study, it was discerned that 41 percent of all owner-surrendered animals at shelters were obtained via “free to good home” ads.

There are no shelters with no-kill policies nearby and you refuse to gamble with fate and hope that they get adopted in time. Please don’t let the animal out of your door without a signed adoption agreement. This will usually stop dishonest people in their tracks. The most important thing you can do to discourage this kind of person is to charge an adoption fee!
